How to Dial an Armenian Number
Armenia's country code is +374. For Yerevan landlines the local prefix is 010, but internationally you dial just 10 — always drop the leading zero. Armenian mobile numbers start with 9X (e.g. 91, 93, 94, 95, 96, 98, 99) and are dialled with no leading zero after the country code.
Just type the full number into the Give a ring dial pad starting with +374 and the app takes care of the rest.
🇦🇲 Surprising & Funny Facts About Armenia
Chess Is a School Subject
Armenia is the only country in the world where chess is a compulsory subject in the national school curriculum. Every child from grade 2 onwards learns chess as part of their regular timetable — not as an after-school club, but as a graded class. Armenia has produced more Grandmasters per capita than virtually any other nation.
The World's Oldest Winery
In 2011, archaeologists excavating the Areni-1 cave complex in southern Armenia found the world's oldest known winery, dating back approximately 6,100 years — predating Egyptian wine production evidence by over a millennium. The site contained a wine press, fermentation vats, and storage jars. Armenia was making wine before anyone had even invented writing.
Noah's Ark Parked Here
According to the Bible and several ancient traditions, Noah's Ark came to rest on Mount Ararat — the iconic snow-capped volcano that dominates Yerevan's skyline and is the national symbol of Armenia. The ironic twist: Mount Ararat is technically in Turkey, not Armenia. Armenians can see their national symbol every day from Yerevan, yet haven't been able to set foot on it since 1921.
The World's First Christian Nation
In 301 AD, the Kingdom of Armenia became the first nation in the world to adopt Christianity as its official state religion — beating the Roman Empire by over a decade. The Armenian Apostolic Church, founded by Gregory the Illuminator, has been the country's spiritual heart for over 1,700 years. Armenian churches are some of the oldest continuously used religious buildings on Earth.
An Alphabet Invented Overnight (Almost)
The Armenian alphabet was created in 405 AD by a single man: the monk Mesrop Mashtots. He invented all 36 letters (later expanded to 38) specifically to translate the Bible into Armenian. The alphabet is so perfectly engineered for the Armenian language that it has remained essentially unchanged for over 1,600 years. Linguists consider it one of the most phonetically accurate alphabets ever designed.
The Cognac That Fooled Churchill
Armenian brandy (locally called "cognac") was so highly regarded that Sir Winston Churchill is said to have consumed a bottle of Ararat brandy every day for decades. At the 1945 Yalta Conference, when Stalin offered Churchill Ararat cognac, Churchill declared it superior to French cognac — and allegedly switched his daily brand for the rest of his life. Armenian brandy has been winning international blind tastings against French cognac ever since.
