How to Dial a Cypriot Number
Cyprus's country code is +357. Unlike most European countries, Cyprus has no separate city area codes — every number is 8 digits and dialled directly after +357. The first two digits identify the region: 22 for Nicosia, 25 for Limassol, 24 for Larnaca and Ayia Napa, 26 for Paphos, 23 for Famagusta.
Mobile numbers start with 96, 97, or 99. Just type the full number into the Give a Ring dial pad starting with +357 and the app handles the rest.
🇨🇾 Surprising & Funny Facts About Cyprus
The Flag With a Map on It
Cyprus is one of only two countries in the world whose flag displays a map of the country itself. The copper-orange island silhouette on a white field is instantly recognisable. The colour isn't decorative — copper is the whole point. The Romans called the metal aes Cyprium ("Cypriot bronze"), shortened to Cuprum, giving us the symbol Cu and the English word "copper." Cyprus literally named a periodic table element.
A Beach Where Turtles Have Priority
Lara Beach on Cyprus's northwest coast is one of the last remaining nesting grounds of the endangered green and loggerhead sea turtles in the Mediterranean. During nesting season, sections of the beach close to bathers entirely. The turtles hold right of way — and they appear entirely unbothered by this arrangement.
Birthplace of Aphrodite
According to Greek mythology, Cyprus is where Aphrodite, the goddess of love, was born from the sea foam — specifically near Petra tou Romiou, a dramatic sea stack on the southern coast. The island still carries the unofficial title of "the Island of Love." With 326 sunny days a year, it is arguably well-qualified for it.
Europe's Oldest Living Tree
In the village of Hala Sultan Tekke grows an olive tree estimated to be around 5,000 years old — one of the oldest living trees on Earth. It still produces olives. Olive trees on Cyprus are not just agriculture; they are living records of family history. Some trees on the island predate the founding of Rome by several millennia.
The World's Oldest Named Wine
Cyprus produces Commandaria — a sweet dessert wine with a documented history of over 5,000 years of continuous production. Made from sun-dried grapes using a method described in ancient Greek texts, it is believed to be the world's oldest named wine still in production. Richard the Lionheart famously called it "the wine of kings and the king of wines."
The Hottest Country in the EU
Cyprus is officially the hottest and sunniest member state of the European Union. Nicosia, the capital, averages more than 326 sunny days per year and regularly sees temperatures exceeding 40°C in summer. The winters, however, are famously mild — coastal December temperatures regularly reach 20°C, which is not a record, just Tuesday.
