How to Dial an Irish Number
Ireland's country code is +353. All Irish numbers are written locally with a leading zero — when dialling internationally, drop that leading zero. A Dublin number that starts with 01 becomes +353 1, a Cork number starting with 021 becomes +353 21, and a mobile number starting with 083, 085, 086, 087, or 089 becomes +353 83 etc.

Four-Leaf Clovers Are Even Rarer Than You Think
The shamrock — Ireland's national symbol — has three leaves, not four. The lucky four-leaf clover is a genetic mutation occurring roughly once in every 10,000 plants. St Patrick used the three-leaved shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity, which makes the four-leaf version not just lucky but technically a theological heresy. Ireland has essentially been misrepresented in gift shops worldwide for centuries.
Halloween Was Invented Here
Halloween originated in Ireland as the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated over 2,000 years ago. The Celts believed that on the night of October 31st, the boundary between the living and the dead dissolved. Irish immigrants brought the tradition to America in the 19th century, where it was commercialised into the global event we know today. The iconic dark stout was invented in Dublin in 1759, when Arthur Guinness signed a 9,000-year lease on the St James's Gate brewery — at an annual rent of £45. The lease still has roughly 7,730 years to run. Guinness contains iron, B vitamins, and antioxidants; a 1920s UK advertising campaign ran the slogan "Guinness is Good for You." Doctors no longer recommend it, but the Irish remain unconvinced.

Northern Ireland's most famous landmark: approximately 40,000 interlocking hexagonal basalt columns formed by ancient volcanic activity, stretching into the sea. Irish legend attributes them to the giant Finn McCool, who built the causeway to Scotland. Geologists offer a less dramatic but equally astonishing account involving lava cooling 60 million years ago. UNESCO agrees: it's World Heritage.
Ring of Kerry — Ireland's Most Scenic Drive
A 179 km circular route around the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, passing glacial lakes, mountain passes, deserted islands, and traditional Irish villages. The drive passes Killarney National Park, the Gap of Dunloe, and Skellig Michael — the remote rock island used as Luke Skywalker's hideaway in Star Wars.
Newgrange — Older Than Stonehenge
A prehistoric passage tomb in County Meath, built around 3,200 BC — making it older than both Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. Every year, on the winter solstice, a shaft of sunlight enters a roof-box above the entrance and illuminates the inner chamber for precisely 17 minutes. The waiting list to witness this in person is currently over a decade long.
Connemara — Wild Atlantic Wonder
A rugged landscape of bogs, lakes, mountains, and dramatic coastline in County Galway. Connemara is one of the last places in Ireland where Irish Gaelic (Irish) is still spoken as an everyday language.
