How to Dial a South African Number
South Africa's country code is +27. All South African numbers are 10 digits locally and always start with 0. When dialling internationally, drop that leading zero. Cape Town numbers start with 021 (becomes +27 21), Johannesburg with 011 (becomes +27 11), Durban with 031 (becomes +27 31). Mobile numbers use prefixes 06x, 07x, and 08x.
Type the full number into the Give a Ring dial pad starting with +27 and the app takes care of the rest. The call rate will be displayed under the dialled number.
🇿🇦 Surprising & Funny Facts About South Africa
11 Official Languages — A World Record
South Africa is the only country on Earth with 11 official languages: Zulu, Xhosa, Afrikaans, English, and seven more. Government documents can technically be issued in any of them. How civil servants keep track of which language to use on any given Tuesday remains one of the country's enduring mysteries.
Where the World's Biggest Diamond Was Found
The largest diamond ever discovered — the Cullinan Diamond, weighing 3,106 carats — was unearthed near Pretoria in 1905. It was cut into 9 major stones; the two largest, the Great Star of Africa and the Lesser Star of Africa, now sit in the British Crown Jewels. In other words, the British Crown is literally made of South Africa.
Three Capitals — Because Why Choose?
South Africa has three official capitals: Pretoria (executive), Cape Town (legislative), and Bloemfontein (judicial). This unusual arrangement dates back to 1910, when the country couldn't agree on a single capital, so it diplomatically picked one for each branch of government. A perfectly South African solution.
Penguins on an African Beach
At Boulders Beach near Cape Town, a colony of African penguins shares the shoreline with sunbathers. Yes, real penguins — in Africa — waddling past beach towels and selfie sticks. The African penguin (Spheniscus demersus) is endangered, but still cheerfully bewildering tourists who did not expect to share their beach holiday with tuxedoed birds.
The Cradle of Humankind
The UNESCO-listed Cradle of Humankind north-west of Johannesburg contains the world's richest concentration of early hominin fossils, some over 3 million years old. Including Australopithecus africanus — one of our distant ancestors. In a very real sense, you may be calling South Africa to connect with family you didn't know you had.
First African FIFA World Cup Host
In 2010, South Africa became the first African country to host the FIFA World Cup. The tournament introduced the world to the vuvuzela — a plastic horn producing a sound somewhere between a foghorn and 80,000 bees. Fans worldwide debated whether this was culturally rich or audiologically dangerous. The vuvuzela did not care either way.
🗺️ Best Places to Visit in South Africa
Cape Town & Table Mountain
Table Mountain — one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature — looms over the city with its famously flat top, often draped in a wispy "tablecloth" of cloud. Cape Town is consistently ranked among the world's most beautiful cities: two oceans, wine estates, a historic waterfront, and the white sands of Clifton Beach all within easy reach.
Kruger National Park
One of Africa's largest game reserves — roughly the size of Wales. Home to all five of the Big Five: lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino, and leopard. A Kruger safari is less a tourist activity and more a full reset of your sense of scale. The park also offers night drives and guided bush walks for the braver visitor.
Cape of Good Hope
The dramatic southwestern tip of the African continent, where Atlantic and Indian ocean currents meet. Rocky cliffs, wild baboons, and a lighthouse mark the spot that mariners once feared. Today you can stand at the signpost showing distances to cities worldwide and feel very far from everywhere — in the best possible way.
Stellenbosch Wine Routes
Just 50 km from Cape Town, Stellenbosch is the second-oldest European settlement in South Africa and the heartland of its wine industry. Hundreds of estates line mountain valleys, surrounded by Cape Dutch architecture from the 17th century. South African Pinotage, Chenin Blanc, and Cabernet Sauvignon are the wines to try — don't leave without tasting all three.
The Garden Route
An 800 km coastal stretch between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth — ancient forests, blue lagoons, pristine beaches, and charming towns. Knysna is famous for its oysters and its lagoon framed by dramatic cliffs called The Heads. The Bloukrans Bridge bungee jump at 216 m is the highest commercial bungee in the world — for those who prefer their scenery at speed.
Durban — The Warm Coast
South Africa's warmest major city and largest port, with a rich Indian cultural heritage — the largest Indian population outside India lives here. The Golden Mile beachfront, steaming curry houses, surf-friendly Indian Ocean waves, and the colourful Victoria Street Market make Durban feel like a city that belongs on two continents at once.
